Before considering a glutathione drip, understand the evidence and risks.

Patients often search for IV glutathione for skin whitening, anti-aging, “detox” or fat melting. These proposed benefits are not equally supported, and an intravenous treatment carries risks beyond those of oral or topical products.

Does IV glutathione whiten skin?

Evidence for intravenous glutathione as a skin-lightening treatment is limited. A 2024 systematic review found only one placebo-controlled IV study, with inadequate evidence of benefit, and concluded that IV glutathione should not be used for this purpose because of lack of efficacy and side effects. Oral and topical research cannot automatically be used to claim the same effects for an IV product.

What about “detox,” anti-aging or fat melting?

These are broad marketing terms, not established indications for an IV drip. Glutathione has biological antioxidant roles, but that does not prove that an infusion removes unspecified “toxins,” reverses aging or melts body fat. IV glutathione is not an obesity treatment or a substitute for evidence-based metabolic care.

Why IV safety matters

Risks can arise from the active ingredient, dose, other ingredients, product quality, compounding, contamination, venous access and infusion reactions. The U.S. FDA has reported clusters of adverse events after compounded glutathione injections, including nausea, vomiting, chills, low blood pressure, breathing difficulty and hospitalization.

Our publication standardThe website will not promise skin whitening, anti-aging, detoxification or fat melting from an IV drip. If any infusion service is offered, the exact indication, product source, dose, evidence, consent process, sterile standards, monitoring and emergency pathway must be documented first.

Safer consultation questions

  • What exact outcome is being sought?
  • Is there evidence for this product, route and dose?
  • Is the product approved and traceable?
  • Who administers and monitors the infusion?
  • What serious reactions can occur, and how are they managed?
  • What alternatives have better evidence?

This page is educational and does not recommend IV glutathione for cosmetic skin lightening, detoxification, anti-aging or fat reduction.
