Can Weight Loss or Myo-Inositol Restore Periods in PCOS?

Clinic patient education · Evidence checked 3 October 2026

Learn about Dr. Fowad Shahzad’s clinical focus and professional background.

PCOS is still a familiar term in searches about irregular periods and hormones. In May 2026, it was renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS). This article uses both names for the same condition. Monash University explains the name change.

Can weight loss make PCOS go away?

Weight management can improve symptoms and metabolic health when someone has higher weight. However, reaching a particular weight does not guarantee regular periods or fertility. PCOS/PMOS also occurs at a healthy weight. Healthy eating and physical activity remain useful even without weight loss; for someone who is not overweight, the emphasis is healthy habits and avoiding excess weight gain. The international guideline supports this individual approach.

There is currently no cure, but symptoms can be managed. Irregular periods, acne, unwanted hair and difficulty becoming pregnant may need different treatments. Similar symptoms can also have other causes: the label “hormonal imbalance” does not establish a diagnosis. NHS patient information describes these differences.

Do not wait indefinitely for periods to return

A missed period should not automatically be attributed to PCOS. If pregnancy is possible, check for it promptly. Thyroid problems, raised prolactin and other conditions can also interrupt periods. Persistent absence needs assessment, even after weight loss. The ASRM guidance on absent periods explains why the history and appropriate testing matter.

In PCOS, long untreated gaps between periods can allow the womb lining to thicken. A clinician may recommend protection with a suitable progestogen treatment or hormonal contraceptive, depending on your circumstances and pregnancy plans. Do not postpone that discussion while waiting for a target weight. RCOG explains womb-lining protection.

Which medicines might be discussed?

A combined contraceptive pill may help irregular cycles or unwanted hair when suitable; metformin may be considered for metabolic concerns. Treatment depends on risks, symptoms and pregnancy plans. These are decisions to make with a clinician, not a reason to start medicines yourself. Guideline treatment recommendations.

What about myo-inositol sachets in Pakistan?

Inositol is not a proven cure. A review of 30 trials involving 2,230 participants found possible improvements in some metabolic measures, but the overall evidence was uncertain. Findings about a supplement cannot establish that a particular sachet will restore periods, cause weight loss or achieve pregnancy. Read the systematic review.

The guideline allows considering inositol after discussing preferences and uncertainty, but cannot recommend a particular type, dose or combination. Quality can vary. For infertility, inositol remains experimental because benefits and risks are insufficiently established. Tell your clinician about any sachets or supplements you use. Inositol recommendations, sections 4.7 and 5.8.

Prepare a focused discussion

Bring your period dates, previous test results and the actual supplement packaging or a clear label photograph. Write down the concern that matters most to you: periods, skin or hair symptoms, metabolic health, or pregnancy. Ask what each proposed treatment is intended to improve, how benefit will be assessed, and when it should be reviewed. This article does not endorse a Pakistan sachet brand, dose or registration status.
